Chat over Chai #4

Every month I make plans to do a weekly update on my making and things I’m enjoying at the moment ,but then just let that thought slip through the cracks.

We are in level 2 of lockdown.Covid -19 situation has been so much better in NZ than in other parts of the world. I have so so many things to be grateful for , but in this time of uncertainty,I have been quite scatterbrained. While I keep reading and hearing about how we all navigate these surreal times in our own ways, I hate to admit that I have been struggling with anxiety as well.

I am trying , to be productive and positive. Sometimes I win and sometimes I lose. However , I ‘m not giving up and I try to focus on things that bring me joy.

a kindness rock we found on our path meant to spread smiles in the community

I’m writing down everything, to keep track of my schedules, the things I do ,to keep track of things and slow down and enjoy.

Like I said before, I’m trying and giving myself grace to fall down and get back up again.

Signs of Spring are popping up everywhere in the form of daffodils, cherry blossoms and hyacinths, I just hope we will have gone back to level one normality by the time Spring and Summer rolls by.

Spring Scenes in Hagley Park

A jaunt to Hagley Park to witness Spring in all its glory “is a must do  “my very first friend in Christchurch told me fondly remembering her own childhood days, when I came to Christchurch two years back. We have religiously kept up with the tradition ever since.

The spring showers almost threatened not to let that happen this year, but over the weekend, the clouds and rains gave way to bright blue skies and gorgeous sunshine with just enough breeze to cool us down on a warm day.

Needless to say, I was so excited to be surrounded by beautiful flowers and birds and be able to click away till my camera battery died and came back home with a big smile on my face.

The ducks swam up to us  fearlessly hoping to be fed.

We sadly did not take anything to feed them. they sure seemed disappointed.

After much coaxing I managed to get one picture of Lil B among the daffodils. He didn’t want to pose for pictures because he was busy hunting Pokémon

People people everywhere, enjoying the weather

A jolly mood seemed to prevail everywhere….DSC_0259DSC_0264 (1)

I’m sure it ‘s because of the flowers, the myriad bird songs

and witnessing  new life sprout out of the once dull winter earth.ad2fa-dsc_0361

Spring projects

The landscape in Spring  is truly a visual treat;,flowers blooming everywhere, birds chirping, bees buzzing…. the skeletal trees sprouting tender green leaves. Its truly a sight to behold  the earth come alive with vibrant colour and vivacity after seeming dead and dry all Winter.

Seeing the Spring fairy happily prancing about touching every tree and grass and bulb with a colour spangled magic wand, fills me with hope. Things that appear hopeless outside still has hope within and everything will turn out ok in the end after all !

As much as I dislike Winter, it makes me appreciate Spring and the change of seasons more than ever .

A friend gave me a few Kowhai seedlings, until then I had not paid close attention to these gorgeous yellow flowers or that it’s nectar is much sought after by birds!

With the arrival of spring, I have been gravitating towards sewing. It started with me making a baby snuggle blanket with some lovely woodland fabric I had got earlier in the year.

backed it with fleece and it does not have any batting .

After I finished my purple zippered pouch, I decided to seize the fact that there was purple thread on the machine and finish up the drawstring pouch that I had set aside when I ran out of purple thread on my bobbin halfway through the making of the pouch

J made a request for  a quilt , with fabric that I loved. He didn’t want the traditional man quilt. Still I didn’t want him to have something he didn’t like at all  so we choose fabric that we both liked Of all the fabric we saw on the Stitchbird website, the Vintage Picnic was the fabric we liked.

I decided to follow the basic jelly roll beginners quilt top by Melanie k ham. Worked up quickly and this is what I have finished so far

I’m just loving it! The splash of colours in my surroundings and in my works in progress.

Day Tripping: Waikuku Beach

When the weather gets gorgeous ,the school break starts, and the day light savings kick in,then its  time to go exploring out and about Christchurch.

This time,we decided to drive upto Waikuku Beach… its just a half an hour drive from Christchurch in the Waimakiriri district.

Waikuku Beach is a very beautiful beach.

The weather was gorgeous for the drive, but walking out on the beach, I needed my jacket on…. to protect me from the chilling wind.

Lil B loves the water and wanted to swim . With the terrible cough he has been having for over a week now, walking up and down the sand dunes was the sensible option.

The drift wood on the beach offered to be the perfect walking sticks and a boy definitely needs two of those for scaling up the ‘mountains’

Seemingly untouched, we saw a couple of surfers on the beach .However, the Surfers Lifeguard watch house makes me believe that the Waikuku beach must be  a surfer’s paradise. Plus a great place for kids to frolic around in the sea.

We drove around spotting water birds

and enjoying the rustic charm of the area.

when this board caught our eyes

A hidden little gem that we thoroughly

enjoyed exploring

First things first though…as soon as I saw the word craftworks, I made a beeline  into the store.

We were greeted with the friendliest of smiles and an array of glorious handmade glass beads, jewellery, tableware. The owner told me,she made them all out of test tube heat resistant by blowing the glass.

I searched up and found their website! I do want to go back there.

This large antique mill that was built sometime in the 1870s, houses a large assortment of things .From Antiques ,trinkets, homewares and Kiwiana Memorabilia to gorgeous clothes , accessories and collectibles.

I just adored the exposed brick walls and the gorgeous, friendly resident dog inside. oh and not to forget the old fire place adding on the vintage charm and warmth to the place .

The drive back was dedicated to spotting babies…

Btw,where did September go? seems like it whizzed past when I blinked!

If you are looking for a fun and pretty gift to make for a fashion jewelry loving girl in a jiffy ,then this is the pattern to try.

I only had pink ombre with me,I’m sure it would look pretty in other ombre colours . I would like to see how it looks in solid too.

Before I go, I want to show you the colours of Spring on my balconyIMG_2103 IMG_2104

and lets say a  hurray  for the rose plant that survived the summer heat and winter cold and is ready for the Spring with her beautiful blooms

With school starting and the year end assessments starting as well we are having a bit of a crazy time around here.

I am pretty easy going with the boys about  grades. As long as they have decent grades, I am ok with it.But that has not stopped my little one from getting stressed with  his school life.(He is a perfectionist by nature! Has to check that he has finished all his work twice. And before he goes to sleep runs a mental check to see if he has finished all his work.Probably like A says I brought the wrong baby home from the hospital 😛 while his dad insists he gets it from me!really?!)

He has  declared that he would like to” cancel school from now on and go straight to work instead “ ,when he grows up! Although he has been getting remarkable grades , and is always on the good books of the teachers, this imp is “totally jealous of me playing at home all day while he has to go school”.Yes that was what he told me! I wonder if he thinks that I order food from someplace  and some mysterious pixie does all the million things to keep his little life running smoothly.
